In the Department of Geoengineering and Raw Materials Extraction (DGRME) at Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation, a Scientific Seminar of the combined DGRME, 6th Priority Research Area (6PRA) of the Silesian University of Technology (SUT PL EU, Politechnika Śląska) ‘Climate and Environmental Protection, Modern Energy’ and the Section of the Mineral Exploitation, Underground and Tunnel Construction of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Katowice Division) was held on 14.05.2025 at 1:00 pm.
The seminar was chaired by DSc Piotr Bańka, Prof. at SUT (Head of DGRME) and Prof. Marcin Lutyński (Head of 6PRA).
The content of the Scientific Seminar was a presentation by PhD Krzysztof Tomiczek, Assist. Prof. at SUT entitled: ‘Natural Disasters and Environmental Protection. Selected Aspects’. The presentation was a kind of summary of the issues related to the implementation of the Erasmus Plus Capacity Building Project Geomatics Disaster Risk Reduction. SUT PL was the Project Leader, the Project was led by DGRME and PhD Krzysztof Tomiczek was its Head Coordinator.
The 71 slides present the main issues related to natural disasters, their causes, prevention, management, safety, statistics, maps, formulas and characteristics, etc.
The scientific seminar was held in Polish.
From 1st slide:
(Natural) disasters accompany the activities and life of societies.
Although Poland is not a country very high affected by natural disasters on the world map, but … / they do occur, both on a macro scale, e.g. floods and fires, and on a local scale, e.g. landslides, strong winds, intense rainfall, tremors, local tornadoes.
Most of the phenomena of disasters can be described by laws and formulas, and their mechanism can be described in terms of the scientific fields that are the subject of the work and research of the Department of Geoengineering and Raw Material Extraction:
mechanics of ground and rock masses, hydrology and the influence of water on the behaviour of soils and rocks, geophysics and seismicity,
nowadays, disaster analysis is inextricably linked to geodetic issues, geodetic and geographic information/informatics, satellite-based detection, etc.
Although, in general, the number of natural disasters remains globally stable, with a slight upward trend, economic losses and deaths are increasing.
The topic of the Seminar was influenced by the implementation of the Erasmus ‘Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction’ Project. […]
