GeoDRR news. As an indirect result of the GeoDRR Project cooperation 🤝, the Student PBL Project is coming to an end. The Project was carried out in the period March-September 2023. The Project title is: Numerical study of the influence of water saturation of a soil and/or rock medium on the possibility of landslide in the context of different geometrical and material properties of this medium.

The 🇵🇱🇲🇾 PBL project was managed at the Silesian University of Technology, Wydział Górnictwa, Inżynierii Bezpieczeństwa i Automatyki Przemysłowej (Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation) under the supervision of: Krzysztof Tomiczek (coordinator, SUT PL), Mou Leung Tan (USM MY), Anna Bluszcz (SUT PL) and Katarzyna Tobór – Osadnik (SUT PL).

The project was implemented by students Puteri Nur Atiqah Bandira (leader, USM), Jakub Skórka (SUT), Siti Hamsah Binti Samsudin (USM), Nur Zulaika Binti Alimi (USM), Tharshini Murthy (USM) and Paulina Golombek (SUT).

👍Milestones were achieved as part of the student PBL Project:

o Definition and identification of project objectives.

o Literature study of the project content: fundamentals of geotechnics and geomechanics in the context of selected soil and rock properties, fundamentals of numerical modelling, slope/slope stability and safety assessment.

o Construction of numerical model(s) of slope/slope for different geometric and material properties using FLAC2D (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua) software.

o Analysis and evaluation of slope/slope stability or landslide phenomena in the context of different material, geometric and water saturation properties.

o Final and summary work.

The Project also resulted in a simplified numerical geotechnical analysis of a tragic landslide in Batang Kali (Malaysia).

The Project results will be presented by students at the GeoDRR workshop, January 22nd at Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan (Philippines), as a case study for students.

We would like to thank all the participants of the PBL Project.🙏🙂
