Frequently occurring earthquakes continue in the Cyclades
The hundreds of earthquakes that continue in the Cyclades, off the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Ios and Anafi, have caused alarm among residents and scientists.
Experts point out that the intense seismic activity is not linked to the Santorini volcano, however they emphasize that vigilance is needed as no earthquake has been recorded that can be characterized as the main one.

When people hear the word Santorini volcano, their minds go straight to the Santorini Caldera, that is, the Nea Kameni volcano. We always associate it with the great Minoan eruption that occurred 3,600 years ago and caused very great destruction, which we do not expect, we will expect it after 20,000 years. So we rule out this scenario,” Evi Nomikou, associate professor of geological oceanography and physical geography, tells MEGA.

“The last eruption in the Santorini Caldera was in 1950 with various other eruptions in the 18th and 19th centuries that did not cause any destruction on the island. So let’s rule out the words volcanic eruption, Santorini volcano, Santorini caldera.”

The Columbo Volcano

“In addition to the Nea Kameni volcano, there is a submarine volcano northeast of Santorini in the underwater area, at 500 meters, called Columbo, which is active, it is the most active submarine volcano in the entire Mediterranean, where at 500 meters we have found hydrothermal fields, that is, chimneys that emit air.

We have seen the ‘breathing’ of the volcano. This volcano emits gases where when there are changes in these gases that are emitted or their chemical composition changes or there is movement in the subsoil, then we have pre-eruptions. That is why this volcano is being monitored,” he added.
